In talking with my students, I wanted to make clear that the source of this tragedy originates at the spiritual and heart level.
Apart from the biblical narrative, we would often lose heart–but those who know and worship King Jesus have a hope that is not of this world.
If I’m being honest with myself, I used to think Jesus died for my sins, and now the rest was up to me.
We no longer face the condemnation our sin deserves. We can look to the cross where Jesus took all our sins (past, present, and future) away.
The gospel is gloriously good news for the outwardly “good” person as much as it is for the blatantly “bad” one.
When we don’t allow our children to fail or see their brokenness (or ours), we cheat them out of seeing the depth, breadth, and magnitude of the cross.
Those of us in Christ know that there is forgiveness and redemption available to all who call on him, but the consequences of the sin remain.
