Rooted Parent Top Ten November 2024

Welcome to the Rooted Parent Top Ten, a curated list of resources from across the web that we believe will be helpful to parents raising teenagers. Here you’ll find articles, podcasts, and videos to support you in gospel- centered discipleship and interpreting youth culture. While most are gospel focused, others are included because they include a message of common grace. (The opinions presented in these articles do not necessarily reflect the position of Rooted Ministry.) At the end, you’ll find Rooted resources compiled from the last month’s new offerings. We hope this resource is helpful!

Gospel- Centered Parenting

3 New Films Offer Wisdom to Parents by Brett McCracken, TGC. “If you’re a parent looking for a relatively wholesome film to watch in this month of Thanksgiving, these three are solid options. Thrilling and riveting in different ways, they’re full of wisdom about parenthood and childhood in a hostile world.”

God’s Grace for Mom’s UnMerry Holiday by Christine Chappell, New Growth Press. “God knows how much I used to pressure myself to create whimsical Christmas moments for our family! But when my experience of merriment became affixed to that goal, I’d refuse to rest until I reached it.”

Helping Teens Who Self-Harm by Rosalyn Ayeung, SOLA Network. “The teenager’s heart may feel like dark waters – murky, hard to see through, and difficult to retrieve, but meeting them from a place of understanding will help bring them out of the isolation that so often accompanies the shame associated with self-harm.”

Thinking Through Bullying With Your Child by Julie Lowe, New Growth Press. “One of the most fundamental things we can do for our children is to instill in them a confidence that value and worth comes from the Lord, not the world around them. Identity in Christ may sound abstract, but it hits at the core of how young people treat each other.”

Theology of Parenting talk by Gretchen Ronnvik, Mockingbird. “Christian parenting isn’t about aiming for perfection but a life soaked in the grace of repentance.”

Regrets In Parenting and Bothering Jesus by Lauren Whitman, New Growth Press. “We run to Jesus. We plead with him. We ask for him to act. We bother him again and again because we can. Because we have access to him. Because he willingly takes on our burdens, so that we may be relieved of their heaviness.”

Teen Culture

How Parents Can Fight Back Against the Digital Deluge of Life by Katherine Johnson Martinko, After Babel. “…the goal is to be fully engaged in the moments that matter most, and let go the rest of the time, letting the child play independently while the parent does whatever they need to do.”

Do Children Need to Consent to Puberty? By Alan Schlemon, Stand to Reason. “Even though we have access to the truth (both special and general revelation), we can still become deceived (Col. 2:8). Therefore, stay vigilant.”

The Post-Christian Morality of ‘Wicked’ by Brett McCracken. “But even if the story helpfully praises the costly pursuit of justice and fighting for the marginalized, in the end its rejection of moral absolutes leaves audiences without real hope or clarity.”

Artificial Intelligence And Relationships: 1 In 4 Young Adults Believe AI Partners Could Replace Real-Life Romance by Wendy Wang and Michael Toscano, IFStudies. “A much higher share (25%) of young adults believe that AI has the potential to replace real-life romantic relationships. Furthermore, heavy porn users are the most open to romantic relationships with AI of any group and are also the most open to AI friendships in general.”
