Today on Rooted we are praying for both our current President and the President- elect. In order to streamline the prayers for reading, we did not write out “President and President-elect” in every prayer, but simply used “President” to capture both men. Praying through the list twice, with President Trump and President Biden held up before the Lord individually, would be a wonderful way to fulfill the command we have to pray for our leaders.

Why we are praying:
First of all then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior… (1 Timothy 2:1-3)
Prayers for the President and Administration:
Lord, I pray that our President will come to You as a little child, realizing he doesn’t know how to come out or to go in. May he think of himself as Your servant, one who needs an understanding heart so that he may discern between good and evil. I ask that You give him the wisdom he desperately needs to guide our country at this time. (1 Kings 3:7-9)
I pray, Father, that our President will be strong and prove himself a man. I pray that he will keep the charge You have given us: to walk in Your ways, to keep Your statutes, and Your commandments… that he will prosper in all that he does and wherever he turns. May our President, his cabinet, our Congress, and our judiciary walk before You in truth with all their hearts and with all their souls. (1 Kings 2:2-4)
God, You say that the king’s heart is in Your hand, that You can turn it wherever You wish. Turn our President’s heart toward You! I pray that You will show our president what is good, and that he will do what You have required of all of us: to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with You. (Proverbs 21:1, Micah 6:8)
Father I pray that each of our leaders will do nothing through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind may each of them esteem others better than themselves. Let each leader look out not only for their own interests, but the interests of all other Americans. (Philippians 2:3)
Father God, we ask you to do for our President as You did for Cyrus the Great and hold his hand. Subdue nations before him. Go before him, Lord, and make the crooked places straight. Break in pieces the gates of bronze and cut the bars of iron. Please give to him the treasures of darkness and hidden riches of secret places, that he may know that You, O God, are the God of Israel. You have called him by name; help him to see that You are the Lord and there is no other. Strengthen him, O Lord, that the world may know, from the rising sun to its setting, that there is none besides You. (Isaiah 45:1-6)
I pray, Father, for our nation. Here we have the President we have chosen and some of us have desired, and some have not. We take note that You have set him over us. But if we fear You and serve You and obey Your voice, if we do not rebel against the commandments You have given us, then all will be well. However, if we rebel against You, Your hand will be against us all. (1 Samuel 12:13-15)
Father I pray that our President will submit to You. I pray he will resist the devil, and instead draw near to You. I pray he will cleanse his hands and purify his heart, humbling himself in Your sight. (James 4:7-10)
I pray that our President will be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. (James 1:19)
Father, guard our President from foolish and ignorant disputes. Show him that this only generates strife. I pray that he will serve this entire nation, realizing that he must not quarrel but be gentle to all, patient, and in humility correct those who are in opposition. (2 Timothy 2:23-24)
Father, I pray that our President will not show favoritism for one group of people above another, that he will not honor the rich above the poor, the whites above the nonwhites, the men above the women. I pray he will not be haughty, nor trust in riches, but trust in You alone. May he do good and be rich in good works, ready to give and willing to share. (James 2:1-6, 1 Timothy 17-18)
Lord, I pray that You will rid the administration of envy and self-seeking, because confusion and every evil thing comes with such arrogance. I pray instead You will give our President and his advisors Your wisdom, which is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy, without partiality and without hypocrisy. May they be peacemakers who sow the fruit of righteousness in peace. (James 3: 16-18)
Father, I pray that all grace will abound toward the president of the United States, that he will always have all he needs in every situation, that he will have an abundance for every good work. (2 Corinthians 9:8)
