Rooted Parent Top Ten June- July 2023

toes in sand

Welcome to the Rooted Parent Top Ten, a curated list of resources from across the web that we believe will be helpful to parents raising teenagers. Here you’ll find articles, podcasts, and videos to support you in gospel- centered discipleship and interpreting youth culture. While most are gospel-focused, others are included because they include a message of common grace. (The opinions presented in these articles do not necessarily reflect the position of Rooted Ministry.) At the end, you’ll find Rooted resources compiled from the last month’s new offerings. We hope this resource is helpful!

Gospel-Centered Parenting

Motherhood Isn’t What I Expected by Katie Faris, Crossway. “Motherhood may require more faith than anything else we’ve ever participated in, but it can also open our eyes much wider to our complete dependence on Jesus, his sufficiency, the beauty of the gospel, and the soul-satisfying promises of God.”

Two Powerful & Practical Commands for Fathers: One DO & One DON’T by Forrest McPhail, RootedThinking.com. “Fathers, how can we worship God through our parenting? How can we illustrate the power of the Gospel in how we raise our kids? What does it mean to be a good father?”

How to Help Your Kids Love the Bible by William R. Osborne, Crossway.org. “… to love God’s word—in a biblical sense—means much more than feeling a certain way about it. Psalm 119 reveals that loving God’s word is obeying it (Ps. 119:1–2), storing it up (Ps. 119:11), longing for it (Ps. 119:20), delighting in it (Ps. 119:24), and choosing it (Ps. 119:30). As we can see in these verses, the Bible’s description of loving God’s word is not anti-emotional, but it is certainly more than emotion?”

On Sibling Rivalries John Piper, Desiring God. “…in these very broken and sin-ruined relationships of brother and brother and sister and sister, God nevertheless has worked redemptively, savingly.”

4 Questions to Answer Before Giving Your Child a Phone by Daniel Stegman, TGC. “What’s the right age? This is a tricky question for parents. Once you hand a child a phone, chances are you’re not taking it back. So before you take the plunge, here are four questions to consider.”

Proverbs and Prime Day by Walt Mueller, CPYU. “Agur understood human nature and he knew his weakness. In wisdom, he prayed to be rich in faithfulness. It’s a challenging prayer that shakes up our prevailing attitudes and reflects God’s will, way and Kingdom priorities.”

Youth Culture

Get Phones Out of Schools Now by Jonathan Haidt, The Atlantic. “They impede learning, stunt relationships, and lessen belonging. They should be banned.”

Transgenderism and Kids by Sarah, Gentle Reformation. “This letter serves as an example of how to interact with families with a wealth of information as they deal with transgender issues. “

The Next Generation: Forming Middle and High School Students for Lifelong Faith As in Heaven podcast with Jim Davis, Skyler Flowers, and guest Cameron Cole, TGC. “Cole shares practical steps that parents and church leaders can take toward disciplining and instilling a love for the local church and an affection for the gospel among teens and young adults.”

E-cigarettes are still flooding the U.S., addicting teens with higher nicotine doses by Liz Szabo, Philadelphia Inquirer. “The U.S. surgeon general has warned that vaping poses significant risks: including damage to the heart, lungs, and parts of the brain that control attention and learning, as well as an increased risk of addiction to other substances. More than 2.5 million kids used e-cigarettes in 2022, including 14% of high school students, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.”
