Welcome to the Rooted Parent Top Ten, a curated list of resources from across the web that we believe will be helpful to parents raising teenagers. Here you’ll find articles, podcasts, and videos to support you in gospel- centered discipleship and interpreting youth culture. While most are gospel focused, others are included because they include a message of common grace. (The opinions presented in these articles do not necessarily reflect the position of Rooted Ministry.) At the end, you’ll find Rooted resources compiled from the last month’s new offerings. We hope this resource is helpful!
Gospel-Centered
Where’s My Dad? By Clarissa Moll, Hand In Hand Substack. “My boys don’t just need mentors in their schools and neighborhood and church. In this broken and decaying world, they also need men beyond their circles of influence to emulate and follow.”
Here Be Dragons: What Christians Need to Know About Romantasy by Kathryn Butler, TGC. “… young readers may see an intriguing cover and unwittingly end up reading grievously inappropriate content. The high schoolers I interviewed said the back-cover copy of fantasy books rarely offers clues about spice.”
The Theology of Work and the Stay-at-Home Mom: Embracing the Value of Our Calling by
Shiphrah Lakka, indianaya.com. “Our worth comes from knowing that, as Christ-followers, every task we do, no matter how ordinary—wiping a counter, breaking a fight between siblings, or teaching math—is done for God’s glory. It’s all holy work.”
Building the Habit of Family Worship by Esther Shin Chuang, Christianity Today. “In the Philippines, pastors are often seen as the sole spiritual leaders of the flocks, so Christians often don’t see the need for further discipleship in the home… ‘Many parents rely on church programs or Sunday school for their children’s spiritual growth, but this overlooks the importance of family-led discipleship as described in the Old Testament’.”
Whose Voice Are You Listening to in Parenting? by Katie Polski, The Promises and Practices of Scripture, Substack.”When you’re confused from differing advice on how to proceed in a parenting decision, listen to the voice of the Lord. He has more power than your greatest fear in parenting, and God will provide an abundance of wisdom as you guide your children (James 1:5). Trust Him.”
Don’t Let Your Fears Hold Back Your Children by Melissa Edgington, yourmomhasablog.com.”A big part of raising children is God teaching us to trust Him, and when it comes to experiences and adventures that are reasonably safe, we shouldn’t hold on so tightly that our kids aren’t allowed to see what reliance on God feels like.”
Teen Culture
Raising Screen-Free Boys by Katherine Johnson Martinko, After Babel Substack. “Every family with boys is different and needs to find what works for them, but I will offer some general practical advice based on years of research, conversations with other parents of sons, and my personal experience.”
6 things parents don’t know about eating disorders (but should) by Becca Wood, Today.com. “Marshall notes that primary care and pediatric doctors won’t typically screen for eating disorders at a routine appointment, so a child who isn’t medically underweight could be missed.”
Letting teens drink alcohol at home may lead to heavier alcohol use as young adults, study finds by Sarah Lynch Baldwin, CBSnews.com. “…a new study in the journal Addictive Behaviors found that parents providing drinks — or even just letting underage kids taste alcohol — is linked to heavier drinking and alcohol-related issues down the line.”
What American Teenagers Say They Want Out of Life by Mandy Taheri, Newsweek. “the younger generation is keen on career fulfillment, relationships, and financial security over some more traditional milestones like marriage and children.”
