“One thing I really like about the Knowing Jesus curriculum is the rehearsal of the gospel each week. We have a wide variety of kids coming to youth group – one is the pastor’s kid who has heard it their whole life, and one kid who drags his parents to bring him each week. But either way, the kids that are there every single time now know that grace means “God’s undeserved love for sinners.”

What will students learn from the Knowing Jesus curriculum?

In a powerful moment between Jesus and His disciples, Jesus turns to them and asks a seemingly simple question, “Who do you say that I am?” Yet, what is truly remarkable about this moment is what Jesus did right before asking this question. Jesus first asked them a different question: “Who do others say that I am?” Jesus knows that there are many false stories swirling in the culture around them about who He is—stories that could easily invade their own thoughts. So, Jesus first has His disciples name those false stories, knowing they will pale in comparison to the true story. After this, Jesus proceeds to ask His disciples the one question He knows truly matters: “Who do YOU say that I am.”

Even though the world may tell them a different story, Jesus knows what matters most is their answer to this one question: Who am I, to you

While Jesus could have spent time first disproving the false stories of the culture, He chose instead to follow up with the one question that truly changes everything. Even though the world may tell them a different story, Jesus knows what matters most is their answer to this one question: Who am I, to you?

Jesus is highlighting this question as the cornerstone of faith. Yes, it matters what we know about Jesus, but just as significantly, it matters what we believe about Him.

What we know about Jesus matters because it will shape what we believe. Belief, therefore, is taking what we know and declaring it as truth. Finally, Peter’s response offers us the greatest of hope from this story. Peter answers, “You are the Christ.” And it is this truth that Jesus declares to be the foundation of His church: Jesus is the Christ.

This is the purpose of this study. We will unpack both who Jesus is and why that matters for us. If Jesus is our healer, what does that mean for our pain? If Jesus is the risen Lord, what does that mean for our sin and suffering? If Jesus is God’s Son, what does that mean for our own sonship?
