Frequently Asked Questions
-
How does Rooted choose mentors for this program?
We thoroughly vet all of the mentors who serve in the Rooted Mentorship, but two considerations stick out when it comes to mentor selection for the program. First, is a prospective mentor theologically aligned with Rooted? That is, do they agree with our Five Pillars and do they hold the same historic, Christian positions as Rooted on issues like the Trinity, the person and work of Jesus Christ, and the inspiration of Scripture? And second, does a prospective mentor have a significant amount of experience in the field of youth ministry that will allow them to invest well in younger youth pastors?
-
What considerations go into placing mentees with mentors?
Upon acceptance into the Rooted Mentorship, each mentee will complete a detailed questionnaire which asks questions about ministry experience, ministry context, and the like. Based on the answers to those questions and conversations with our ministry development team, mentees will be placed with mentors who can speak most effectively to a mentee’s context and experience.
-
What does an average month look like during the Rooted Mentorship?
In a standard month, the mentee will be on a virtual call with their mentor and the other mentees (unless geography allows for in-person meetings) in their cohort to discuss the month’s lesson. Later in the month, after the mentees have had time to think about and reflect on the earlier conversation, each mentee will have a one-on-one coaching call with their mentor to talk more in depth about what’s going on in their own life and ministry.
-
How much time will the Rooted Mentorship ask of me as a mentee?
For the average mentee, the Rooted Mentorship should require 4-6 hours per month. This frame includes prep time for meetings and the meetings themselves. Some months might require less than four hours, and some might require a bit more than six hours to get the maximum amount of return, but on average 4-6 hours per month is to be expected.
-
What can I expect to have gained from the Rooted Mentorship upon completion?
Our expectation is that after these 15 months, you’ll be more proficient in teaching the Bible to students, you’ll feel more comfortable partnering with parents, and you’ll be better equipped to handle crisis situations among other things. Additionally, you’ll receive a Rooted Youth Ministry certification to signal that you’ve completed our mentorship Program.
-
How long is the Rooted Mentorship Program?
The youth ministry program is one year. That includes a two month break in the summer.
The family ministry program is 12 months with no break.

Are there any prerequisites for either mentorship program?
No, you do not have to complete one to apply for the other. Nor are there any prerequisites. For each lesson, you will be asked to do homework to prepare for the lesson and reflect on the lesson prior. We just want for you to be present with a longing to learn and grow in your relationship with Jesus.

How often do you start new mentoring cohorts?
Our mentorship cohorts kick off every August and January.
