Rooted Parent Top Ten January- February 2022

Welcome to this month’s Rooted Parent Top 10 – a list of parenting articles from across the web for the Rooted community. This list represents ten articles we believe will encourage and equip you as you parent your kids. At the end of the list we have included several of the pieces that ran on Rooted Parent over the last month. If you have an article you’d like to contribute to the next edition of the Top Ten, please email Anna at anna@rootedministry.com.

Gospel-Centered Parenting

When the Nest May Never Be Empty by Emily Pilkington, GCD. “I have come to realize that independence isn’t the ultimate goal that I have for any of my children. My desire for them is something far more communal.”

Fatherhood for Imperfect Dads by Barry York, Desiring God. ”Your parenting won’t be flawless any more than your marriage has been without disappointments.”

The Moms Are (Still) Not Alright by Jane Anderson Grizzle, mbird.com. “2022 parenting is impossible but our hope comes not from the fantasy of time alone or abandoning our roles as parents — or even from trying harder to be a better mom, but from the God who does not abandon us, who is with us always and who loves our children even more than we ever could.”

Weeping For the Prodigal by Barry York, Gentle Reformation. “Like Christ weeping over Jerusalem as He foresaw her destruction, Paul said he was speaking the truth, he was not lying, and his conscience bore a Spirit-confirmed witness regarding his unceasing grieving for the lost children of Israel. Certainly the Christian parent is right in doing likewise.”

Combating Perfectionism in Communal Culture: A Reflection on the film “Encanto” by Faith Chang, SOLA Network. “One problem with this counsel is the underlying assumption that the core issue for all perfectionists is their sense of self, either in how they perceive themselves or wish others saw them. While it’s important for Christians to know what God thinks of us, for those in communal cultures, perfectionism is often more complicated than how we are regarded by ourselves or even by God.”

I Was Patient Before Having Kids by Erik Raymond, TGC. “When we have kids, it reveals our lack of patience. But when God has children, it shows his abounding patience.”

God, Protect My Girls by Tim Challies. “I ask God to protect them from their own sin and unbelief, from their own hard-heartedness, from their own fleshly desires. I pray that he will save them from themselves and then cause them to grow to be more like Christ.”

Teen Culture

How to Argue Against Gender Transition Interventions for Children by Joe Carter, TGC. “Most reasonable adults, of course, would not support giving children the ability to make irrevocable decisions about their vocations or marital prospects. Why then do they support irrevocable decisions about gender transitioning that will also affect them for life?”

Six Things Christians Should Know About Gen Z by Sarah Zylstra Eckhoff, TGC. “Nobody’s debating that Gen Z is less religious than any other generation… But in the last two to three years, students in Chicago have started telling [Tony Dentman, campus minister] it’s their grandparents’ generation who are their faith connection.”

Teen Lives, Interrupted by COVID by Elinor Carucci, The New Yorker.“I remember for a while thinking, If I talk to friends, it will be fine. But eventually I found myself not talking to anyone, just being in my room the whole day. For some reason, talking to people on FaceTime or Zoom, you’re even lonelier.”
