In this short series, we’ve asked some folks to tell us how a past talk from a Rooted Conference has either changed their ministry, their life, or even just fed their weary soul. The first article in this series can be found here.
Back when I first attended the Rooted conference in 2012, Mary Willson gave a message on Mephibosheth (2 Samuel 9) called “Receiving the King’s Grace.” She brought to life how Mephibosheth was orphaned, crippled, and condemned. Then she drew insightful connections to how the youth in our ministries share similar forms of brokenness. The story of Mephibosheth reaches its climax as he meets King David. Instead of killing him as an enemy of the state, King David changes his legal status to a son of the king! Willson used this incredible story to illustrate the power of grace at work in the lives of our students. But then she challenged us to reflect on how we as ministers are Mephibosheth, because in her words, “only until we are Mephibosheth, can we be King David.” If I intend to share grace with students, I must reflect upon how I’ve received it myself.
